Brock ran a hand over his mouth. Had that been a flash of hurt in Caleb's eyes? That didn't make sense. Not over a stupid dare. Brock turned away and stepped forward.

That may have been a mistake with how... excited he still felt from that kiss. Like every cell that made him up had been electrified. It had to be too dark back here for Rhys to see any of that. "Yeah." His voice came out rough. "We're here. What did you want?"

"Alfie's settling the tab. We figured we should get back before it gets too late. You know how Skip can be."

"Yeah." The rest of his words stalling out as Caleb came up beside him.

"What's he like?" Caleb asked. "A lot of yelling?"

"More disappointed looks," Rhys said.

"So, like a parent." Caleb had gotten those looks for missing curfew as a teenager.

"I guess so." Then Rhys turned away. "Nik's getting a ride with us. If you guys are, too, we'll need to make sure to request a large enough car."

They had all arrived in their own rideshares, or had walked, as it wasn't that far from the hotel. Brock didn't see why the way back should be any different.

Caleb was already stepping forward. "I'm definitely not catching one on my own in an unfamiliar town."

Brock looked over, and Caleb raised an eyebrow in return. "I mostly pass, but if someone does clock me, or now that it's out in all the blogs and social media, if they actually recognize me, I'm not putting myself in a position of being assaulted. Just because your brothers aren't around doesn't mean there aren't..." Even in the dimness of the corridor, Brock was sure all the color drained from Caleb's face. "Fuck."

Brock stared. “They wouldn't…” The denial was immediate, almost instinctual. Even though he knew his brothers had never been as innocent as his father wanted to believe. Any time Brock had tried to speak up about things they'd done, he'd been the one reprimanded. Now he saw the hurt, and it was definitely hurt this time, in Caleb's eyes before a shutter came down over them.

“Right. Well, I'm out of here. I'll wait with Nik.”

Brock felt frozen in place as Caleb turned and strode away. He knew his brothers had pulled some pranks on Caleb when they were all kids. They'd hassled him even when Christopher and Daniel had grown up, but assault? No way. He must not have meant that literally.

He jumped at the touch of Rhys's callused fingertips on his arm. "You coming?"

Brock blinked at him a few times, then dragged in a breath. He let it back out slowly. "I'll grab my own car. See you in the morning."

"Yeah, okay." Rhys didn't move. "Are you sure you're all right?"

Brock forced a smile. "Why wouldn't I be?"

Rhys stared hard at him then gave a dismissive shrug. "No reason. See you back at the hotel."

Once he was alone, he took out his phone but just stared at the screen as Caleb's words kept swirling through his head.
